Aboriginal history[ edit ] Newcastle and the lower Hunter Region were traditionally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal People, who called the area Malubimba. Shortland entered what he later described as “a very fine river”, which he named after New South Wales’ Governor John Hunter. Over the next two years, coal mined from the area was the New South Wales colony’s first export. Philip Gidley King , the Governor of New South Wales from , decided on a more positive approach to exploit the now obvious natural resources of the Hunter Valley. In the same year, the first shipment of coal was dispatched to Sydney. This settlement closed less than a year later. But this year’s Christmas parade has left many disappointed with some even calling it ‘the worst ever’.
Crowds gathered in the city centre on Sunday afternoon before the main event got underway at 5pm, but many have since taken to social media to complain about the disappointing number of floats included in the parade. Similar angry comments were made about the event two years ago as the traditional parade was ditched in favour of acrobats suspended beneath a giant arch and a giant balloon.
But last year’s parade , inspired by the Polar Express, was a real crowd pleaser as it featured Disney princesses and Swansea Bay’s famous land train was even decorated for the occasion. There seems to be far less Christmas spirit generated by this year’s parade.

Shop with Goodnews Books Going on Retreat It often seems as if we rush through life at such high speed while in our heart is the essential interior flame of being. Our rushing often brings it to the point of extinction. But when we sit down to meditate, in stillness and simplicity, the flame begins to burn brightly and steadily. John Main That is a good way of thinking about the purpose of daily meditation, and also a good way of approaching a retreat.
A retreat is indeed an opportunity to remove ourselves for a while from the distractions of our daily lives, but not just so that we can get a break from it all. I was once visiting Lincoln Cathedral, taking a break on the journey home from a work commitment.

Styles vary by region, reflecting local materials and and needs. Timber was the usual material for small and medium-sized houses in areas where good timber was available. Dating timber buildings is notoriously difficult. Since the same techniques were used for centuries, the safest approach is to get a dendro-date for a main timber that does not appear to be reused.

Cob – unbaked clay with organic material to bind it – is durable if plastered over and kept from damp at top and bottom. The earliest standing examples in the British Isles date from around , but these are exceptional. Earth houses generally have a life-span of years, though this could be prolonged by casing the walls later in brick.
The flexibility of the material permitted rounded corners. Another clue to cob construction is the thickness of the walls.

In the days before the Internet, many single people who wanted to find a relationship might have posted a personal ad in a local newspaper or perhaps gave telephone dating a whirl. While these types of dating were great for their time, they have mostly been replaced with Internet dating, which works in a similar way but is much more effective and easier to do.
When using an online dating service, instead of sending a personal ad in the post to a newspaper, you would simply type a short profile about yourself into a dating website such as ours, for other members to find and read. You can also easily upload a photo of yourself to add to your profile too. Once you are happy with your profile, you can use simple search tools to view profiles of members who live near you for you to get in touch with.
